To truly know yourself and all your potential, who you are completely, it is vital to know our God who designed you. He formed us in His image so we take after Him. If we walk closely with Him, we will reflect that nature more and more.
One of the things that is not generally understood is that we are spirit before we are born in our bodies and we remain spirit for all eternity. We are fundamentally a spirit being encased in a physical body. Therefore, it is by being led by our spirit and not our flesh that we can live in His image. And the fruit of the Spirit details those characteristics: God is good, God is love, God is gentle and kind. God is patient and allows us to live with a free will and He bears with us when we make wrong decisions but He is faithful to stay with us throughout our failures and mistakes. God is peace and the source of our peace when we allow Him. These are qualities we were created to possess and extend to others. This is our true identity.
Genesis 1:27-28 tells us “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” We see that God gave us authority over everything on earth. We also reflect both the feminine and masculine characteristics of God.
We are designed as a 3 part being- spirit, soul and body as explained in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”.
Our body is the physical part of our being; our soul includes our mind, will and emotions; our spirit is our eternal being. We have knowledge and intelligence in our minds, as does God. We are often ruled by our thoughts and our emotions- this is often referred to as our “soulish nature”. God created us with free will and we often live according to the wishes of our own will rather than following the will of God. Many times God gets blamed for situations in the world which are a result of man exercising his free will, not of God making something terrible happen.
One of my favorite verses speaks about how we are to work our our three parts in order to be who God intended us to be. “Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:1-2 NASB). We can renew our mind and become more like a person in the image of God, particularly by reading Scripture and replacing worldly thinking with God’s biblical perspective.
We have the potential to be all that God created us to be. When we look at Him, we see the characteristics of what we can be. We can know with certainty that He loves us, sees us as beautiful and with unlimited potential. We have intelligence, authority, creativity, feelings, a desire for relationship all from God. Our part is to recognize it, allow our spirit to be closely aligned with God’s and lead us, and to pursue what He calls us to do with all He has placed in us.
Are you inspired to be all you can be?
