As I sit basking in the warmth of the sun with a gentle breeze, my soul is restored. I gaze and am mesmerized by the majesty of the vast ocean with rays of light glistening on the waves. There is little that I have found in life that reminds me of the greatness of God and at the same time, refreshes and inspires me, as does the beauty of the ocean or mountains. I have had some of my most precious moments of silent communion with God while overwhelmed with awe at the greatness, power, and immense beauty of His creation.
Resting quietly surrounded by the beauty of nature is one of the most peaceful experiences I know. We become aware of how small we are in the larger picture of the universe. And blessedly, our problems and worries are also diminished when viewed through the perspective of the greatness of creation. It seems as though our mind is uncluttered of all the many thoughts that cause confusion or stress and hinder hearing what God is trying to say to us. Psalm 23: 2-3 states it like this: “He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul”
I think of visiting a beautiful, restorative nature spot as a way of “recharging our batteries”. Since we all use cell phones, most can relate to the comparison of how the responsibilities and worries of life can wear down our battery. If we do not take time to rest and be restored, it is similar to charging a cell phone battery just enough to use it for awhile but it is still weak and not functioning at peak capacity. How many of us run around from jobs to errands to work at home and chauffeuring children to activities, only to fall in bed exhausted?
How much value do we place on stopping to rest, relax, have time to think, to just be? When we stay on the go without time to rest and refresh, we cannot function at our peak capacity. Often relationships suffer, as fatigue and stress reduce patience and tolerance. God created sabbath for a reason. Even Jesus took time to go off by Himself and pray and be restored. It is a true blessing to be able to take a rest, spend precious quality time with family and friends, stop and reflect on what truly matters, and perhaps change our perspective on life.
Where is your place of refuge and refreshing? What helps you to experience peace, tranquility and becoming re-energized?
